Voted best seafood specialty restaurant in the Haywood County area.
NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT!
It is March first, 2009. It is snowing. Opinions vary among locals and visitors, but no one can deny the purity, silence and beauty of new snow. It doesn’t last long in the Carolinas, so enjoy it while you can.
I arrived at Captain’s Bay at 11 am and the rain had just turned to those huge fluffy flakes the size of dimes. “And now for something different . . .” Inside the restaurant we are transported to the Bahamas or to Key West. There is a huge mural on the wall depicting a sunset, with seagulls swooping and a lighthouse guaranteeing safe harbor. A soothing waterfall and calming atmosphere relocate you from the mountains to the coast. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty of customers; I was asked to show up before the doors were open to the public. By the time I left, maybe two hours later, the tables were half full—a tribute to the popularity of Captain’s Bay, even on a day when travel conditions were not the best. Eight inches of snow was predicted today
A friendly and welcoming staff greet you as you enter the door. Humberto and Christy run a tight ship here at Captain’s Bay and do their best to make sure your experience is a pleasant one. For example, let me tell you how they treated me. Let me be clear about this—I am the publicist, the ad man who has come to create text and take photos. I like to have fun but when I arrive at a work site I am completely professional. Humberto, Christy and her staff immediately made me feel at home, in fact as a family member. All of us got into a festive mood as I took photos and the gang mugged for the camera. After I took some ambiance shots of the hand made ships and a few ships in a bottle, Humberto called me over and asked me to photograph three of his dishes hot from the kitchen. When I finished the shoot, Humberto invited me to have the salmon dinner. I was brought coffee and all of my needs were attended to as if I were YOU—the real customer. Here is a photo of me enjoying my meal. While I took a “time out” Christy and her daughter, Hanna, took a turn at writing some text. I was particularly pleased at this informality, especially since I am a retired professor of English from Western Carolina University. I treated my students with great informality and freedom and it was awesome to see it at work here as well. The simile is correct. Christy and her staff work like the crew on a ship.
I also want to mention that every summer my family spends a week on Ocracoke Island. Captain’s Bay is as attractive and clean and the fish is as fresh as any of the local restaurants on the Outer Banks. The seafood served here is flash frozen from the ships in South Carolina, wrapped and boxed in ice or dry ice and shipped here all within 24 hours.
Head cook, Luis has been in the culinary trade since 1998 with a “major” in seafood. Luis is driven and is a perfectionist and takes pride in the presentation and quality of his dishes.
Christy’s wait staff include her daughter Hanna Mathis, Claudia Adame, Logan Presnell, Honey Thomas, Kelly Carlson, Jessie Campbell, Jessica Arrington, Erica Martinez, and Laurel Mack.
Christy’s hostesses Kaylee Medford and Brittany Cook make your arrival on the red carpet, which in this case is blue, inviting and fun.
