Buncombe County

The following materials are accepted at the Buncombe County Solid Waste Management Facility’s Convenience Center at no charge:

  • Lead-acid batteries
  • newspaper
  • corrugated cardboard
  • blue bags or co-mingled recyclables including:
    • #1 and #2 plastic
    • aluminum cans
    • clear, green and brown glass
    • and steel cans
  • motor oils
  • tires
  • and white goods including stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers and all metals

The Solid Waste Management Facility’s Convenience Center does not accept mixed paper and non-infectious medical waste.

From I-240

  • From I-240, take exit 1B (Brevard Road/Hwy. 191). At the traffic light, take Highway 191 North.
  • Turn left onto Shelburne Road. Turn left onto Hominy Creek Road.
  • The Transfer Station will be on the left.

From I-40

  • From I-40, take exit 47 (Brevard Road/Hwy. 191). At the traffic light, take Highway 191 North.
  • After crossing I-240, turn left onto Shelburne Road. Turn left onto Hominy Creek Road.
  • The Transfer Station will be on the left.

Buncombe County accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronics every Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at a special drop-off area at the landfill at no charge for residents. Businesses can also drop off electronics for 30 cents per pound.

The following items must be separated out of loads and brought to the electronics recycling area:

  • Computers (monitors, CPU’s, keyboards),
  • Calculators
  • Copiers
  • Fax Machines
  • VCR’s & DVD Players
  • Telephones
  • Stereos
  • Televisions
  • Cell Phones
  • Video cameras

Household Hazardous Waste is also accepted on Fridays:

  • Paint and paint-related items such as water sealer, paint thinners, enamels and polyurethane will be charged at $2 per gallon.
  • There is no charge for pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, motor oil, antifreeze and lead-acid batteries.
  • No hazardous wastes from businesses will be accepted.
  • Bio-hazardous materials, radio actives and explosives are not accepted at any time.

Items accepted for recycling are: aluminum cans, catalogs and magazines, newspapers, other paper, third class mail, corrugated cardboard, household cardboard boxes (cereal, cracker, cake mix), plastic bottles and jugs, steel cans, paper grocery bags, and telephone books. Used motor oil is also accepted at the ten centers.

Materials Recovery Facility
The Materials Recovery Facility is on Recycle Road in Clyde and operates Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residential and nonresidential waste comes through our Materials Recovery Facility.

Materials accepted at the Materials Recovery Facility are residential trash, commercial waste, industrial waste, appliances, furniture, carpet, mattresses and bedsprings, and metals. Special waste collected at our Materials Recovery Facility are tires and lead-acid batteries. Antifreeze is collected at the Jones Cove Convenience Center Site.

A $38 per ton tipping fee is collected at our Materials Recovery Facility on all commercial and industrial waste. There are no tipping fees on regular household waste hauled into our Materials Recovery Facility. There is a $38 per ton tipping fee collected on all remodeling materials such as windows, carpeting, bathroom fixtures, etc. at the Materials Recovery Facility. No tipping fees are charged for tires or appliances.

White Oak Landfill
The White Oak landfill is located at Exit 15 - Interstate 40 off of White Oak Road. The White Oak Landfill operates Monday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The White Oak Landfill receives clean wood, brush, leaves, pallets, blocks-brick-concrete, uncontaminated dirt, asphalt and stumps at a cost of $30 per ton. The construction and demolition landfill accepts shingles, painted/treated wood and sheet rock at $30 per ton.
