The Glenn house off of Merrimon Avenue in Asheville is a contemporary design by PBC & L Architecture of Asheville. Built on a steep lot, it has a full, encapsulated and conditioned crawlspace that contains the mechanical equipment.
The butterfly roof, made of Structural Insulated Panels, directs the rainwater to a central roof trough and then down four 4" insulated cast iron pipes buried in interior walls to the crawlspace where the cast iron transitions to 4" PVC. The PVC conveys the water outside into dry wells on either side of the house.
The exterior walls are 2" X 6" frame, insulated with icynene, an open-cell spray polyurethane.
Special features include:
Chinese birch-laminated plywood flooring downstairs cut in 4' X 4' tiles and set in a diamond pattern.
Recycled hardwood palette flooring on the main floor. Cork flooring in the kitchen.
Cast concrete kitchen bar and master double-sink vanity.
High-efficiency Trane two-speed heat pump with a two-stage gas furnace, ERV air exchanger and electronic air cleaner system.
Locally milled locust decking stained bronze to match exterior siding.
Machine-painted fiber-cement, ventilated cladding (airspace behind panels) with exposed stainless screw fasteners and fiber-cement plank siding elsewhere.
Rinnai instantaneous whole house water heater for domestic hot water.
Sliding Shoji screen doors for office and closet doors.
Energy Star lighting and appliances.
Solar screens on west windows to mitigate cooling loads.
Edible landscaping. |
