The Fraser House
The passive-solar-designed Fraser house is located south of Black Mountain off Route 9. It is a certified, Healthy Built Home, meaning an independent auditor determined it met a host of criteria that ensures it is a green home.
The 2,704 square foot home has a basement bermed in the hillside and an upper floor wrapped on three sides by outdoor decking.
Solar collectors on the metal roof provide hot water for domestic use and for space heating from the radiant tubing on both floors. Cooling and de-humidification are achieved with two mini split air conditioners - one on each floor. Because the home is built so tightly, fresh air is introduced into the house and stale air exhausted via a ventilator in the conditioned attic.
The 2x6 frame home sits on a pre-cast concrete Superior Wall foundation. An additional 2” of foam insulation was added to the Superior Wall and the upper house frame was insulated with spray-in open cell polyurethane foam.
Special features of the Fraser home include:
· A wood, barrel-vaulted ceiling
· A locally formulated, non-toxic finish on interior wood trim.
· A malachite green, acid stained floor in the basement
· Black walnut hardwood flooring on the main floor
· Tile kitchen counters and island
