Canton, NC - This picturesque town is the center of Haywood County manufacturing, since it's the main location of Blue Ridge Paper company, the county's largest employer. With a newly refurbished Colonial Theater for concerts and screenings in the heart of downtown Canton, and the 'Mater Fest the first weekend in August, as well as blue grass concerts throughout the summer, there are fun things to do in and around Canton.
Downtown Canton has some interesting shops within walking distance, and some good restaurants, including Mexican and Southern. Pisgah High School, home of the Black Bears, provides a good education for area teenagers, with many continue on to Haywood Community College or four year institutions in the area, such as UNC-Asheville and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC.
The Pigeon River runs through downtown Canton and on into Tennessee, but the upper Pigeon, before it reaches the Blue Ridge Paper Mill, sports some excellent trout fishing in pristine waters. This is also home of Sunburst Trout Company which produces natural trout products, including trout caviar, for the entire nation. Their rainbow trout products are tested for mercury and are mercury-free. As cold-water fish, they are very, very healthy for you.
