Bethel, NC - This farming community is now famous because of Charles Frazier's book "Cold Mountain" which is visible from most spots around. The Pigeon River provides pristine trout waters which flow through the area. Every summer, visitors enjoy the Cold Mountain tour---come on over! Unlike many other towns in Haywood County, the Bethel community has voted "no" to water/sewer lines because they want to remain rural. Way to go, Bethel! The excellent farming land in the area will be the key to feeding Haywood County in the future. The next good thing would be if the farmers went totally organic. (It could happen!) There are two wilderness areas in Bethel inside the Pisgah National Forest that visitors love to hike or visit.
Bethel is close to Canton and Waynesville and all the fun tourist and cabin rentals located there. A brand new elementary school has just been opened, Bethel Elementary, and it has many "green", sustainable features, with a cutting-edge architectural design. You can get on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Bethel and it is on the way to Brevard via NC highway 276. Don't forget "Sliding Rock" nearby and Camp Daniel Boone. The Bethel area includes some of the highest mountain ranges in the East.
